TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): The new education year kicked off in southern Uruzgan province at a time when 51 schools are closed, depriving thousands of students of education, an official said on Tuesday.

Governor Mohammad Umar Sherzad said three major challenges existed to education this year — the Taliban, lack of cooperation from families and low level of teachers’ capacity.

He said the Taliban had forced closure of tens of schools in Tirinkot and other districts.

He said no girls school was functioning in areas under the Taliban control while some boys schools were open nominally. The Taliban don’t allow monitoring officials from the ministry or provincial education department.

Governor Sherzad asked the Taliban to remove all obstacles to education and don’t politicizes education.

Education Director Mirza Mohammad Salarzai said 51 schools are closed in Uruzgan province due to which thousands of children are deprived of lessons.

He asked the conflicting sides, family elders and religious scholars to cooperate with them in promoting education and performing their responsibility in educating the future generation.
