TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Destroyed during the conflict, reconstruction work on roads connecting the provincial capital and districts of central Uruzgan province has begun, officials said on Thursday.
Maulvi Nizamuddin, director of public works, said many roads in the province had been closed for the past six years.
He said the roads being repaired included those leading from Tirinkot to Chora, Khas Uruzgan, Chinarto, Dehrawud Gizab and Charchino districts.
He said these roads had been closed by security forces of the former government, creating great inconvenience for local commuters.
Matiullah, a technical engineer in the province, said they eliminated roadblocks in the past week and now 152 kilometers of roads were being rehabilitated in the province.
“Currently we are repairing damaged portions of the roads and culverts which have been destroyed,” he added.
However, the two officials did not comment on the cost of the roads’ rehabilitation or the source of funding.
Karimullah, a resident of Chinarto district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the road connecting the district with Tirinkot remained closed for years.
“We would cover an hour journey in several hours, but now that the Taliban have come, they opened the road and started repairing it," he said.
A number of other residents held similar views and urged the Taliban to rehabilitate the roads.
It is worth mentioning that Uruzgan is one of the backward provinces of Afghanistan.
