Muttaqi, Cavusoglu discuss pact on Afghanistan airports

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan and Turkey have discussed issues concerning Afghanistan international airports, including Kabul airport, and some provisions of the agreement in this regard.

Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Mottaqi met his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on the sidelines of the “Antalya Diplomacy Forum” meeting, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement said the two countries would work for a speedy solution to the remaining issues through technical discussions, including with Qatar.

Deputy Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zia Ahmad Takal told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Turkey and Qatar want to win contracts for Afghanistan’s airports, including Kabul International Airport, and other international airports.

“The matter has been discussed and the technical aspects remain.”

Afghanistan’s international airports include Kabul, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif (Balkh province), Kandahar and Khost.

According to reports, the first round of talks between Turkey and Qatar on the management of Afghanistan’s five airports  held last year and so far three meetings have been held between the three sides in Kabul and Doha. .

The previous government was overthrown on August 15 and replaced by the current caretaker government, but for a few days, Kabul airport was under US control.

According to reports, US forces damaged some facilities, planes and helicopters at the airport during the withdrawal, but the facilities were rebuilt with the help of Qatar and Turkey and flights resumed from the airport.
