MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Six thousand tonnes of grapes were produced in northern Balkh province this year, showing a spike of over 24 percent, an official said on Sunday.
Agriculture Director Shamsullah Abu Khalid recalled last year 55,000 tonnes of grapes had been produced in Balkh. But this year, the production rose to 6,834 tonnes, indicating a 24.2 percent surge.
He said the Agriculture Department supported farmers in the protection of their orchards from disease. As a result, he added, the grape yield increased.
