KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Educational centers named ‘friendly classes’ have been established for hundreds of children involved in hard labor in southeastern Khost province.

Maulvi Amir Sahib Jan Haqqani, director of social and labor affairs, told Pajhwok Afghan News that about 1,800 children were being educated and trained in these centers.

He said most of these children were engaged in hard labor in the city and were deprived of primary educations due to poverty and economic problems.

He added: “These centers provide education to children for three to six months. We are striving to extend this program to other areas through different organizations.”

Maulvi Haqqani also said they provided vocational and technical training to about five hundred individuals in 12 different fields this year.

“These people are currently busy in their work, have set up shops and have started work in the occupation they learned and 29 people are currently under training.”

Najibullah, 11, one of the children who runs a handcart in the city, said he earned around 200 afghanis by working from dawn to dusk.

He said: “I have studied up to 5th grade, I’m working here in the city, my father is no more. My hope was to become either a doctor or an engineer, but poverty did not let me fulfill my dream.”
