ISLAMABAD (Pajhwok): Pakistani police arrested dozens of Afghan nationals in Islamabad during a nighttime raid and mishandled women last night.

The Afghans were asleep when police raided the Sharjah Plaza in Barakahu area and arrested many Afghans who were later released after questioning.

An Afghan journalist, Ahmad Feroz Esar was among the arrested Afghans. He said: “About 40 police personnel entered and searched violently and inhumanly our houses”.

He said all the police personnel were male and they misbehaved with women during the search of their houses.

He said the police also took their passports and cell phones and refused to comment about the inappropriate timing of the searches.

About 20 Afghans were arrested from their houses in Sharjah Plaza and taken to the area police station.

Esar said the Afghans were released at about 1:30am after the press club officials intervened and the incident made rounds on social media.

Mohammad Shah Rukh Tahiri, a member of Afghan Journalists Group in Pakistan, said: “We, a number of Afghan journalists, created a social media group last year, if an incident happens, we immediately inform each other through our group”.

He said with the help of the press club, they succeeded in getting released Ahmad Feroz Esar from the police custody.

Qamar Yousufzai, a member of the Press Club, also confirmed that a number of Afghans were detained by Pakistani police for investigation last night and then released them.

The police said they conducted the operation to check documents of the Afghan families.

After the political change in Afghanistan, some Afghan journalists and other officials immigrated to Pakistan.
