FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has provided education facilities to hundreds of internally displaced children in northeastern Badakhshan.
These children migrated few years ago from Kunduz, Takhar provinces and some districts of Badakshshan to Faizabad City, the provincial capital of Badakhshan have expressed happiness over the provision of education facility but at the same time they demanded standard classrooms and more education related facilities.
The asked the Education Department to address certain issue such as the lack of teachers, drinking water, and creation of education friendly environment.
Masouda, 11, who migrated from the Yaftal Payan district to Faizabad City along with her eight member family, welcomed the formation of education classes.
She is the student of class 4th in the newly created Sher Khan Primary School and wished to become a doctor in the future.
Mahboba, 12, is another student from the Yawan district who had been displaced due to poverty and came to Faizabad City. She currently studies in this school.
She is thrilled over the creation of this school and was fully interested in learning her studies. She also wished the reopening of girls high school. “I study to become a doctor in the future,” she said.
Ahmad, from the Faizabad Karta area of Kunduz migrated to Faizabad City due to insecurity. He is happy about the creation of new classes by the UNHCR but complained against the lack of education related materials, proper education friendly environment and other issues.
He said the class provided to them has 50 students in one time and when the weather become hot there is possibility that some student may fall sick.
He asked the Education Department and NGOs to help address the existing issues faced by them.
Baz Mohammad, the principal of the Sher Khan Primary School for girls and boys, expressed happiness over the opening of the school and said 512 students displaced from different districts of Badakhshan and neighboring districts had been provided with education facility.
He said around 1,200 families living in this area are mostly displaced families who did not have the financial ability to buy pen, book, notebook and other materials needed for study.
UNHCR on its facebbok page wrote: “Students in Vakilabad village of Badakhshan province are excited to return to school for the new academic year. Right now, these teenagers, who are mostly from displaced Afghan families or returning families residing in the villages, are temporarily in homes (now used as classrooms) built by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They are studying.”
It added: “Besides this, the Women’s Institute for Afghan Women (WAW), one of our partner offices, is starting work this year to build a new school for students to study in better conditions.”
“Vakilabad is a priority area for PARR in Faizabad. Alongside other UN offices, the UNHCR is working in priority areas for repatriation and reintegration to support returning refugees and displaced Afghan families to access essential and protective services.”
“Our other focus is on helping support programs for skills training and livelihood activities, including empowering women and youth. The area-centered approach is useful for reducing homelessness and strengthening the society.”
Mohammad Younis Jahadmal, the UNHCR director in Badakhshan, said the UNHCR considered funds for the construction of 12 classrooms and its work will start soon.
In addition he added the UNHCR considered the execution of similar programme in the Kata Kharman area of Faizabad as well.
He said the they provided education opportunities for 400 displaced persons in cooperation with other UN agencies and the Education Department and also referred some children to the health department and statistics department to resolve their identity issue.
