LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Peach yield has surged by 10 percent in southern Helmand province this year compared to the past, an official said on Wednesday.

Agriculture Director Mawlavi Zainullah Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News peach, grapes, palm, fig and pomegranate orchards had been set up with the support of ROP organization on over 1,000 acres of land in the Nawa, Nad Ali, Garamseer, Nar-i-Seraj districts and provincial capital Lashkargah and it produced positive outcome.

He said now was the peach harvesting time and there was 10 percent surge in its production this year compared to the past.

According to Mawlavi Zahid it had been planned that orchard plantation process would be extended to the Northern provinces next year to help improve the economic condition of farmers and offer masses with their local products.

Atiqullah, who has peach orchard, said around two years ago he set up peach orchard on his 2.5 acres of land and this year it produced peach.

He said besides Helmand he sent peach to Kabul, Kandahar, Herat and Ghazni provinces and it has a decent market.

Another orchard owner Naik Mohammad said that he planted 100 peach trees on half acre land and each tree produced up to up to 170 kilograms of peach.

He called on people to established orchards so that people could benefit from local fruits and products.
