KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has asked the Chinese mining giant MCC to launch practical work on the exploration and development of Mes Ainak copper mine as soon as possible.

Mines and Petroleum Minister Shahabuddin Dilawar met vice president of the China’s state-owned MCC in his office on Monday, the ministry tweeted.

Both sides discussed practical work on the mega project and construction of road to the mine in Logar province, transfer of ancient artifacts from the field of copper mine and other relevant issues.

Dilawar said that his ministry had fulfilled all its responsibilities according to the contract and the company should not delay practical work of this project anymore.

The MCC vice president promised to help 300 families living near the copper mine. He said extraction works at the mine in Mohammad Agha district would be launched after the transfer of artifacts from the site.

MCC, which won the contract in 2008, is expected to invest around three billion dollars to explore and develop the copper mine, possibly the world’s second largest.
