Check dam being built in Badakhshan

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A check dam is being constructed to strengthen the underground water level and prevent flash flood damage in the Jurm district of northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Tuesday.

Qari Qutbuddin Dehnawi, director of agriculture and livestock, told Pajhwok Afghan News check dams were being built in some districts of the province to strengthen the underground water level and control flood damage.

Under a plan of the Ministry of Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock (MoAIL), a check dam was being constructed in the Hindushahr area of the district.

The director said the dam would be 45 metres long and nine metres  high, having the capacity to store 87,750 cubic metres of water.

He added the project would consume more than two million afghanis to be paid from the development budget of MoAIL and would take three months to complete.

With the completion of the project, 1,880 families will directly or indirectly benefit and the underground water level would rise, Dehnawi believed.

Maulvi Mahfuzullah Hamdard, the district’s administrative chief, told the inaugural ceremony the local people would also be provided with employment opportunities on the project.
