JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Sugarcane production grew from 75,000 metric tons last year to 89,000 metric tons this year in eastern Nangarhar province.
Sugarcane is used to make juice, ganderi (small pieces of peeled sugarcane) and gur (brown sugar).
In Nangarhar, about 144 gur factories locally called ghani exist, where tens of people work.
Kama district is known for good sugarcane yield and is home to many ghanis (raw sugar factories).
Farmers in Kama district say the government should assist them with new and modern tools to make their work easy and enable them to produce good quality gur.
