KABUL (Pajhwok): The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will convene an open-ended extraordinary meeting of its Executive Committee at the foreign ministerial level at its secretariat in Jeddah on Wednesday.

The ongoing crimes of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, including the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and its aggressions against Iran’s sovereignty will come up for discussion.

OIC said in a statement on Monday the meeting had been convened in response to the atrocities being committed by the Israeli forces against the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip.

“To date, Israeli actions have resulted in the deaths of 40,000 individuals, mostly women and children, and injuries to over 91,000 Palestinians. Also, civilian properties, including 430,000 homes, have been destroyed along with infrastructure, hospitals, schools, mosques and historical sites. Two million Palestinians have been displaced due to the attacks.”

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed last week in Tehran, the capital of Iran, in an attack blamed on Israel.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Tensions in Middle

Earlier, Iranian newly-elected president said the assassination of Haniyeh was a “major mistake by the Zionist regime [Israel] that would not go unanswered.

G7 Foreign Ministers also called on all parties involved in the current conflict in the Middle East to avoid actions that could lead to further escalation.
