HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Local officials in western Herat province say water from Salma dam was released into the Harirod river on Tuesday to meet the irrigation needs of agriculture lands, urging residents to stay away from the river.
The water release from the Salma dam was aimed to provide essential irrigation water for farmlands downstream, the governor’s house said in a statement.
The statement specifically notified residents of districts located along the Harirod River that Salma Dam’s water was released this noon 12:00pm.
Authorities have requested citizens to avoid approaching or traveling near the riverbanks and to inform others in their communities to help prevent any potential accidents.
The decision was made during a meeting on Monday, chaired by Maulvi Abdul Salam Mustufi Agha, General Director of the Harirod-Murghab River Basin, and attended by Maulvi Sardar Azizi, Director of the Energy and Water Department, as well as representatives from eight police districts of the province.
The meeting concluded with a consensus to release water from the dam in accordance with the seasonal irrigation demands of local farmland.
