KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Expansion work has commenced on the Rahmat Wali Masroor Cricket Stadium in southeastern Khost province, an official said on Wednesday.
Director Engineering Department at the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Mumtaz Omarzai told Pajhwok Afghan News that the expansion project, aimed at increasing spectator seating, has begun at an estimated cost of 34 million afghanis.
He added that upon completion, the stadium’s seating capacity will increase from 8,000 to 15,000.
According to Omarzai, the project was expected to be completed within nine months. Following its completion, further developments will take place, including the installation of seats, lighting, and shade structures for spectators.
He noted: “Previously, foundational works were undertaken at the Rahmat Wali Masroor Cricket Stadium, including the construction of a modern guesthouse and a cricket academy, as well as levelling and greening of the playing field. These projects were completed over the past two years.”
Meanwhile, several cricket enthusiasts and players in Khost urged the Cricket Board to take further steps to promote and support the game in the province.
One cricketer, Izatullah, told Pajhwok: “We request the ACB to pay more attention to cricket in Khost. There are many passionate fans here, but only a few pitches. We need more facilities.”
Another resident, Siraj Haqmal, said the province has tens of thousands of cricket supporters and thousands of players, stressing the need for greater investment in cricket development.
He added: “I believe large-scale projects should be implemented in Khost. I appreciate the relevant authorities for initiating such valuable efforts.”
At the same time, officials from the ACB say they are working to implement various projects and strategic plans to promote cricket and improve facilities across the country.
The board also plans to construct four major cricket stadiums in different regions of Afghanistan to be aligned with international standards and equipped with modern amenities.
