KABUL (Pajhwok): The US Department of Defense has announced that it will withdraw 5,000 American troops from Germany.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the withdrawal of around 5,000 US troops from Germany, the Pentagon said on Friday.
The move comes after President Donald Trump reportedly threatened to pull troops following remarks made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the US war with Iran, ABC News reported.
According to the Pentagon, the withdrawal is expected to be completed within six to 12 months.
“This decision follows a thorough review of the Department’s force posture in Europe and is in recognition of theater requirements and conditions on the ground,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Jack Reed strongly criticized the decision, calling it a “foolish decision.”
He said: “Withdrawing thousands of US troops from one of our most important strategic positions during a time of conflict is a serious mistake that will have consequences far beyond this moment.”
It is worth noting that approximately 38,000 US troops are currently stationed in Germany.
