TARINKOT (Pajhwok): A drive against poppy cultivation would be launched soon in central Uruzgan province to completely eradicate the illicit crop on 1,000 hectares of land, officials said on Monday.
Deputy Governor Sher Pacha Orguni said directives had been issued to security officials and military commanders to prevent further cultivation in the province.
Some farmers had grown the banned crop despite the strict measures adopted by provincial authorities. He directed local commanders to eradicate the opium crop.
Public awareness programmes would be arranged and farmers invited to attend and explore measures for cultivation of alternative crops, he added.
