Situation in Ghazni City back to normal, says UN

KABUL on August 10, has returned to normal, says a UN agency.

In an update, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) said residents moved freely and markets in the provincial capital had reopened.

Telecommunications networks, electricity and water supply are back to normal and government offices have reopened, with the main hospital is functioning.

However, the hospital continues to be overstretched with treating trauma patients. Medical supplies are on standby in Kabul to be dispatched, if needed.

“Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the highway connecting Kabul with Ghazni have reportedly been removed by Afghan military forces...” the OCHA statement added.

More than 21,000 displaced people were identified for humanitarian assistance by August 25 in eight neighbourhoods of the city.

The Afghan Red Crescent Society Food Programme (WFP) distributed food to more than 6,600 people.

Demining teams have completed the search and clearance of unexploded ordnance in 17 localities of the city and destroyed 58 pieces of UXO.
