KABUL (Pajhwok): Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, on Sunday, injuring one person and causing fires, while Ukrainian forces said they had carried out long-range strikes on military and industrial targets in Russia, a media report said.
According to The Guardian, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said missile debris caused a fire in a non-residential area in the northern part of the city, setting several vehicles ablaze.
The Kyiv Military Administration said one person was injured, while witnesses reported hearing explosions after air-raid alerts were issued.
The report said Russia had intensified its air attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said their forces had struck a military airfield in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region and the Progress rocket production facility in the Samara region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Flamingo cruise missiles were used in the operation and that one of the targets was located about 900 kilometres from Ukraine’s border.
He said the strikes were intended to weaken Russia’s military capabilities and pressure Moscow to end the war.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces said fires broke out at both targeted sites. Russian officials, however, said air defence systems had repelled a “massive missile attack” in Samara, while acknowledging limited damage to some industrial facilities.
According to the report, the Progress facility produces rockets used to launch satellites for Russia’s Rassvet satellite network, which Moscow is developing as an alternative to Starlink.
Separately, Russia’s Foreign Ministry called on the United States and Turkey to clarify reports that a significant quantity of US weapons and ammunition stored in Turkey could be transferred to Ukraine. Moscow warned that such a move could affect its relations with Washington and Ankara.
In another incident, Ukrainian officials said a three-month-old child was killed and 11 others wounded in a Russian attack on a residential building in southeastern Ukraine.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted logistics centres, energy and transport facilities used by the Ukrainian military, as well as workshops producing long-range drones.
The claims by both sides could not be independently verified.
