KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Director of Hajj and Religious Affairs Mohammad Omar Akhundzada was injured and his driver killed in an explosion in Kandahar City on Thursday morning.
The blast happened in the Chawni area of the 13th police district of the provincial capital when he was on his way to office, an official said.
Jamal Nasir Barakzai, the police spokesperson, told Pajhwok Afghan News the explosion injured the Hajj and religious affairs director and killed his driver.
The perpetrators fled the area but police have launched a hunt for them.
Local residents said after the explosion, the vehicle carrying the official went out of control and crashed into a shop, injuring four civilians.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which happened a day after a National Directorate of Security (NDS) employee and a worker of the 215th Maiwand Corps were killed in target killings.
Many security officials, tribal elders, women and youngsters have been killed in similar target attacks in the southern province, bordering Pakistan.
