SHARAN (Pajhwok): For the first time, a privately-owned slaughterhouse, costing 1.5 million afghanis, has been inaugurated in the capital of southeastern Paktika province.
Sharan Mayor Maulvi Nasir Hilal, inaugurating the abattoir, said the facility would help monitor the health of animals and keep the city clean.
He said they planned to construct a well-equipped state-controlled slaughterhouse in the city next spring.
Ajmal Bawar, resident of Sharan who built the slaughterhouse, told Pajhwok he had done so out of a sense of national pride.
He added the slaughterhouse was built in a period of two months at a cost of 4.5 million afghanis.
The facility was set up in coordination with butchers in Sharan and the meat would be marketed under the supervision of professional doctors.
Mohammad Wali, a butcher, said previously they did not have a proper place to slaughter animals and the city’s environment was polluted as a result.
