Fresh fruit production up by 60pc in Balkh

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Agriculture officials say fruit yield has increased by about 60 percent in northern Balkh province, where farmers demand a profitable market for their fruits.

Abdullah, an orchard owner from Balkh district, told Pajhwok Afghan News the production of fresh fruits was lower last year,

Growing fruits for the past 15 years. He urged the government to establish cold storage facilities and explore foreign markets for their products.

Najibullah, another gardener from the same district, said they transported their products to Jawzjan, Balkh and Kabul provinces to earn more profits.

“Since there is no market in the district, we used to export our products to foreign countries. However, currently, we have to sell products within the province,” he added.

Mohammad Tahir, a fruit grower from Samarqand district, confirmed the fresh fruit yield had increased but prices had fallen.

Maulvi Shamsullah Khalid, director of agriculture, acknowledged the problems of farmers and gardeners. The government planned to establish cold storage facilities in some parts of the province, he added.

Khalid promised his department would cooperate with farmers and find a market for their products belonging to the Department of Commerce and Industry.

Without elaboration, he said hundreds of tonnes of fresh fruits collected from gardens over 440 hectares of land, showing a 60 percent increase over last year.
