GADREZ (Pajhwok): The residents of Chamkani and Janikhel districts of southeastern Paktia province have asked the government to reconstruct the highway between the two towns as its rundown condition has created many problems for them.
The 32-km long road connects Janikhel with Chamkani and five other districts with neighboring Khost province.
Haji Naek Mohammad, a tribal elder from Chamkani district, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had long been promised reconstruction of the road, but no practical steps were taken.
He said neither the previous government nor the new government had paid attention to the deteriorated condition of the highway.
He said the road connected Janikhel with Chamkani and five other districts with Khost province and daily thousands of people commuted on the route.
Naek Mohammad urged the Taliban government to take practical steps for reconstruction of the key road in order people could breathe a sigh of relief.
Similarly, a resident of Janikhel district, Noor Mohammad Mangal, told Pajhwok Afghan News that there was no security or other problems that could hamper reconstruction work.
He said thousands of people daily commuted on the road but they faced problems due to the rundown condition of the road.
Mangal said the previous government had approved reconstruction of the road, but no work could be carried out due to insecurity.
Similar views were expressed by other residents, who demanded the government should reconstruct the road.
Meanwhile, government officials in Paktia confirmed the road needed reconstruction. Janikhel district chief Qari Shaukatullah said they had shared the issue with the governor’s house and other departments and they had assured that the road would be reconstructed soon.
He said as the system was new it struggled with some problems which once resolved would result into acceleration of reconstruction projects.
He said a contract had been signed with construction company and survey of the road had been completed and efforts would be made to find budget for the project.
It is to be mentioned here that besides Janikhel-Chamkani road, there are a number roads which need reconstruction.
