NGO provides work, study opportunity to 500 women in Balkh

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A non-governmental organization OSSP (Organization of Social Services in Poverty) has paved the way for hundreds of women to learn tailoring and get employment opportunities in northern Balkh province.

OSSP recently started operating in Balkh and has been training about 500 women in the fields of tailoring, embroidery, religious education and basic healthcare.

Khair Mohammad Dehzad, head of the organization, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had set up 10 tailoring centers in Mazar-i-Sharif and some districts.

At each center, he said, up to 40 women learned tailoring from eight teachers. He said one midwife has been hired for each center to provide information to women about basic healthcare.

After the end of their training, each woman would be given a sewing machine and other items, he added.

Students and teachers of these centers said they were happy about the establishment and operation of the organization.

Bareshna, head of one of these centers, said they provided information to women in religious and health fields as well as tailoring. She said most of these women were breadwinners for their families and they had been given the chance to learn tailoring and study.

A student of a center in Mazar-i-Sharif told Pajhwok she was happy for being given the opportunity to work and study.

“I was sitting idle at home and now I have been learning tailoring here. After learning the work, I will be able to financially support my family.”

Through establishing such centers and restaurants, a number of women have provided employment and education to hundreds of other women in Balkh province.
