PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Residents in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of central Logar province, have complained against the lack of professional female doctors and said they were facing dozens of problems.

They said, two specialist doctors worked in the provincial hospital and most hospitals in the district didn’t have specialist doctors.

Shazia, 45, the residents of Charkh district, who brought her daughter for delivery to the hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News there was no specialist doctor in her district.

According to her, the residents are required to take their patients to Naib Aminullah Khan Provincial Hospital in Pul-i-Alam 40 kilometers away from them.

Fatma, a resident of Baraki Barak district and a female activist, said there are few doctors in Logar province and the residents of other districts such as Azra, Kharwar, Baraki Barak and Charkh are more affected by this problem.

She told Pajhwok Afghan News there are no specialist doctors in remote areas because the Ministry of Public Health does not give necessary privileges to female specialists serving in remote areas.

According to her, if the education of girls could not be prevented due to cultural and political problems in the poor areas, now there would be many educated women and doctors in every district.

She said: “The lack of female specialist doctors in rural areas has caused female patients to face a lot of problems; they cannot tell their illnesses to male doctors. We hope that the Ministry of Public Health and the international community will take steps to solve this problem”.

Public Health Director Hafiz Syedul Rahman Qaderi acknowledged the problem of lack of female specialist doctors, but adds that according to the policy of the relevant ministry, only the central provincial hospital has been given beds for female specialists.

He said: “According to the policy of the Ministry of Public Health, there are no female specialist doctors in hospitals and clinics at the district and village levels. “We have two female specialist doctors in the provincial hospital at the provincial level,” he said.

According to the information of the Public Health Department, one hospital at the provincial level, three hospitals at the district level and 56 health centers at the village level are active, with 251 employees, including two female doctors.
