KABUL (Pajhwok): One kilogram of meat is sold 30 afs to 70 afs higher against the municipality price list in capital Kabul, Pajhwok has learned reliably.

The Price and Hording Control Commission of the Kabul Municipality last Saturday during a meeting with butchers and petroleum product unions’ members set the prices of petroleum products, gas and meat. The prices are reviewed every Saturday.

According to the municipality list the price of one litre 92 petrol is 67 afs, Iranian 80 petrol is 65 afs, one litre diesel is 75 afs and on kilogram of gas is 64 afs.

Similarly one kilogram of sheep meat is 430 afs, calf meat is 360 afs, bull meat is 350 afs and one kilogram red meat is 450 afs.

Pajhwok finding showed that shopkeepers sold petroleum and gas products in line with the municipality price list but butchers sold the meat higher than the price list introduced by municipality.

Butchers said that municipality rate was low and they will suffer loss if they sold meat at municipality rate.

Sher Khan, a butcher in the Tahya-i-Maskan area of capital Kabul said he sold one kilogram of sheep meat at 480 afs and one kilogram of calf meat at 420 afs.

When asked why he sold meat at higher price against the municipality rate, he said: “We did not receive the municipality price list and even if we get it we cannot sell meat in this rate because the price of livestock in the cattle market was high,” he said.

Sher Khan believed if he sold the meat at the price that municipality selected than he will suffer a loss adding that municipality should talk to butchers.

Merza Mohammad who has a butcher shop in the 10th police district of Kabul, said he did not received the new pricelist of Kabul Municipality as yet.

He said one kilogram meat of sheep is 500 afs, one kilogram meat of calf is 450 afs and one kilogram red meat is 500 afs.

He said municipality rates are low and he could not sell meat at this rate adding the he would suffer loss.

Ziaullah, another butcher from the 3rd police district of capital Kabul, said he received the price list of municipality but the rates are very low.

“One kilogram of calf meat comes at 400 afs to me so how should I sell it at 360 afs. You, the municipality should once visit the cattle market and ask for the rates. The good thing is that rates should be fixed at the cattle market,” he said.

“We are compelled to sell the available meat at municipality rate but If the same price list is imposed again then we are forced to shut our shops,” he believed.

They asked municipality officials to set prices in a way which is in the interest of buyer and seller.

Kabul Municipality official Niamatullah Brakzai said: “When we issue the price list all representative of shopkeepers are present and they have the responsibility to dispatch the price list to other shops.”

He said shopkeepers violating the price list would be dealt according to the law.
