KABUL (Pajhwok): Five check dams consuming more than 35 million afghanis were inaugurated on Monday after their completion in central Maidan Wardak province.

The Ministry of Water and Energy in a press release said the check dams were built in Maidan Shahr and Narkh, Syedabad and Daimardad districts.

The dams were inaugurated during a ceremony attended by Maidan Wardak River Authority Maulvi Abdul Samad Halim.

Halim said the dams took nine months to complete with financial support of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) under their supervision.

He said the dams had the capacity to store 79000 cubic meters of water and irrigate 3390 hectares of agricultural land.

Maidan Wardak governor Muhammad Omari said 20 water storage dams would be constructed next solar year in remote districts of the province in coordination with relevant sectoral and technical departments
