QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): School students in western Badghis province are complaining about the shortage of textbooks and urging relevant authorities to  address the issue as soon as possible.

Abdul Karim, a student of 11th grade at Hazala High School in Qala-i-Naw, the provincial capital, complained about lack of textbooks.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News that they were given away books for eight subjects only by their school, but due to economic problems, he could not buy other subjects’ books from the market.

He urged the Ministry of Education to provide textbooks to students and ensure that all required books were available with students.

Amir Mohammad, an 8th grader, also complained about lack of textbooks, saying he had to purchase eight subjects’ books from the market.

He faced this issue last year as well and due to lack of books, he could not get the marks he wanted.

According to him, the Department of Education should resolve the issue of the shortage of textbooks with students.

“Textbooks are in short supply. I had to buy eight books from the market. I expect the government to give us books so that we can study better,” he remarked.

Sayed Mohammad Fahimi Attar, a professor at Badghis University, said that the shortage of textbooks affected learning and gaining knowledge gained and could lead to failure of students to pass the entrance exam.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Education should take steps to provide textbooks in the country’s schools and provide textbooks needed by students.

Badghis education director Muhibullah Ehsan said the province received more than 500,000 textbooks from Kabul this year, but the shortage of the books could not be completely resolved.

He added: “This year, more than 500,000 books were provided to us from Kabul, which we distributed to school, but it is not enough because we need about 700,000 textbooks in Badghis.
