KABUL (Pajhwok): The National Statistic and Information Authority (NSIA) have said that based on the interpretation of satellite images, the areas under cultivation --- apart from rain-fed area --- have increased by 7.7 percent this year compared to the last year.
On its Twitter Handle the NSIA said the cultivated areas had been identified with the support of remote sensing and satellite images.
On the bases of the NSIA this year 2.8 million hectares land hand been cultivated. Irrigation cultivation has increased in Herat, Kunduz, Paktika and Paktia while rain-fed cultivation had increased in Takhar, Balkh and Jawzjan provinces.
The NSIA said that cultivation area in Nimroz and Farah provinces had declined. Increase in cultivation land happened at a time when Afghanistan is faced with drought and the lack of adequate water faced farmers with troubles.
