HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The owner of a bookstore in western Herat province is promoting peace and security by publishing and selling books that highlight the importance of peace and stability.

Abdul Wasai, 27, has been selling books in Herat City for the past 10 years. During the past government, he had a book store in Chawk-i-Gulha.

But currently he sells books at the roadside due to economic hardships. As a result of a market decline, he had to close his bookshop.

Calling durable peace and prosperity of the masses his dream, the young man said he was striving to publish books on peace and co-existence.

He added: “Book selling is a cultural duty. People entering this profession don’t think about profit, specially in a situation when the reading culture is low and universities are shut.”

Abdul Wasai stressed as vital the promotion of the book-reading culture. “In most cases, we have seen that countries take advantage of their neighbours’ illiteracy and fuel disputes and rake up issues there.

“Due to lack of awareness and education in a society, conflicts and disputes emerge and get complicated with the passage of time.” He added.

Naveed Alizada, a psychologist in Herat, said: “Learning the skill of living teaches people how to deal with problems in life. Individuals who are unable to learn the art of living find it difficult how to face problems.”

He said study meant becoming experienced, something that helps reduce risks in life and achieve peace. Individuals who read books lean important skills.

Asked about violent tendencies among youth, he replied: “When someone selects a wrong role model. He/she definitely moves in the wrong direction and faces risk/

“But book reading helps identify a positive role model for these youth and they could learn from their experiences and skills.”

Afghan society often faces with disputes and social problems leading to the violation of others’ rights. Study of peace-related books and articles could help improve public awareness and enhance skills needed to deal with challenges.
