PARON (Pajhwok): Drivers complain the poor condition of the Paron-Asadabad highway creates problems for them in the winter.

Zakirullah, one of the drivers, told Pajhwok Afghan News the road was being destroyed with the passage of each day due to lack of attention from the government. Instead of earning, the drivers claim, they are suffering losses.

“This year, the road condition became very bad and dangerous because of possible landslides in some areas,” Zakirullah added.

Roohullah, another driver, said with the start of the snowfall, the road had become more dangerous. Vehicles could fall from the road at any time, he explained.

Relevant officials must resolve the problems of passengers and drivers at least by leveling the road, he stressed.

But Public Works Director Maulvi Ahmad Nabi told Pajhwok they were trying to keep the highway open for traffic and prevent more problems for the residents.

They had already shared the issue with higher-ups and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) was working to address it, Nabi explained.

Saifuddin Latoon, the x governor’s spokesman, said Governor, Hafiz Mohammad Agha Hakim had already discussed the road’s construction with Minister of Public Works Abdul Manan Omari.

He claimed the minister had promised incorporating the road construction project in next year’s national budget.

The road is 84 kilometers long. Work on paving a 22-kilometre portion of it was initiated by the the previous government.

The Bilal Tawab Construction Company had been awarded the contract but the project was stopped after the political change in the country.

Snaking through inhospitable terrain and passes, the highway is blocked for dys by snowfall in the winter.
