KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A group of young men has paved the way for hundreds of children, youth and elders to get free education in southeastern Khost province.

The free education center is set up in the Sambawat township of Nader Shakot district where 650 students attend classes.

Qanonuddin Adel, an organizer of the center, told Pajhwok Afghan News most of the students were children affected by the past conflict and had been unable purse education.

He said school subjects from first up to 12th grade were being taught in the facility and 12th graders were also prepared for the university entrance test.

He said: “We allow children who can attend lessons on a regular basis. Reading and writing learners are shopkeepers of the area who are senior individuals or some of the students are government officials, but have problems in reading and writing.”

Abdul Rahman is one of the students in this center who walks for 50 minutes to reach the center and attend lessons.

He told Pajhwok that he had been unable to pursue education due to insecurity, but currently he was able to attend classes willingly.

“There were clashes and we could not go to educational centers and on the other hand we faced financial problems, currently we want to avail this opportunity and get education in order to reach our goals,” he added.

Asadullah, 16, a 2nd grade student in the educational center, told Pajhwok he could not continue education in the past due to conflicts, but currently he was pleased to have the opportunity.

He added: “In the past, I could study until 2nd grade and then dropped out of school, now I have the chance and am happy from teachers, they teach us very well.”

Mohammad Azim, a resident of the area, told Pajhwok that there was a great need for such free education center because people’s economic condition was not good.

Sayed Kabir Sangin, director of Khost Education Department, told Pajhwok: “Any courses, educational institutions and societies that are established should be in accordance with the policies of the Islamic Emirate, the laws and principles of the Ministry of Education. They should get a license, be registered, know the curriculum, and know the funding sources, so if it is in accordance with these principles, the Department of Education will support and appreciate it.”

He said that the education department would help and cooperate as much as possible with the said educational center.
