SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): A woman in northern Jawzjan province, who grows vegetables at home to support her family after a training course, has asked the government to create more agriculture-related opportunities for women and support them.

In the past 20 years, thousands of women have received training in agriculture and were provided with the necessary equipment.

Rahela, a resident of KokGumbad village in Shiberghan, the provincial capital, has developed a garden at her house after completing agriculture training. She supports her family with the vegetables she grows.

She is the only bread earner of a four-member family: “From the past 10 years, I have been growing vegetables and supporting myself and family members.”

“The hardships of life forced me into hard labor and today I am busy growing vegetables,” Rehela, who lost her husband 12 years ago, said.

“I sell up to 15,000 afs of vegetables monthly, for six months I received $70 from the agriculture department, which helped me a lot,” she said.

She asked the government to expand and support such programs to help people attain self-reliance economically.

Hameeda is another woman who received training in agriculture, livestock and silk forming.

“I participated in silk farming training and received necessary equipment, now I work and am economically self-reliant,” she said.

The Agriculture Department in Jawzjan says 272 women who were part of the six-month rain received $70 each month.
