SAR-I-PUL (Pajhwok): A number of cultural activists in northern Sar-i-Pul province while expressing their concerns said that most of the historic sites in this province were in danger of destruction and could be disappeared if steps for its protection not taken.

Syed Ahmad Haidari, a cultural activist in Sar-i-Pul told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Most of the historical sites in Sar-i-Pul had damaged or destroyed. If the government did not take action to preserve and restore these monuments, we will not have any historical sites in the future. On the other hand, no tourists will come to this province.”

For instance, he said that the historic site related to Imam Jafar in Sar-i-Pul City which has 900 years history was about to erode.

He also said that the main shrine of Imam Yahya which has around 1,000 years old history and the shrine of Abu Ali Jawzjani were also about to erode.

Expressing his concern over the deteriorated condition of historic sites in the province he said: “All the people are witnessing the destruction of the cultural heritage of Sar-i-Pul Province. The Department of Information and Culture must take all possible measures to prevent the destruction of the historical heritage.”

Abdullah, another cultural activist, believed Sar-i-Pul was rich in having historic and cultural sites, adding that no work had been done to attract tourist to the province.

“If officials take steps for the rehabilitation of historic sites and make advertisement for its promotion more people will come to visit them,” he said.
