Kabul Municipality executes 150 uplift schemes this year

KABUL (Pajhwok): Kabul Municipality has planned to execute 150 developmental projects in the central capital city at the cost of over 5.2 billion afs this year, an official said on Monday.

Kabul Municipality Representative Niamatullah Barakzai told Pajhwok Afghan News last year tens of development projects were implemented at the cost of over four billion afs from the municipality own budget.

This year uplift schemes he said would include asphalting of over 30 kilometers of road, rehabilitation of 40 parks, rehabilitation and reconstruction of 25 squares, rounding up and transfer of garbage from different municipality districts.

All these uplift schemes would cost over 4 billion afs which would be provided from the budget of municipality.

Reconstruction, asphalting of roads

According to Barakzai during the last solar year over 30 kilometer of the road had been rehabilitated and asphalted.

He said construction and asphalting of Qala Zamankhan, Nasaji Bagrami, Sherpur, Wazir Akar Khan and G-Khoshal Khan were the main asphalting activities of the last year.

He added the asphalting of Sherpur-Bibi Mahro, Kampani and Kotal were underway.

Rehabilitation of Park

Barakzai said of the total 140 parks, Municipality has rehabilitated and reconstructed 40 parks and work on some other parks was underway.

He added the Wazir Akbar Khan Park was had been rehabilitated and now it is a proper place for entertainment.

He said an entertainment park was being designed in the Mohammad Nader Khan hill and now it became a proper place for people.

“Nader Khan hill is a very popular and big place in Kabul city… This hill has many and good recreational facilities, most importantly, there was usurpation going on in that area before which had been stopped,” he added.

He said now work of renovation of Kabul City Shahr-i-Naw Park was underway and Kabul Municipality is also working on the widening and development of Kabul Zoo.

People praise Municipality’s uplift work

Mohammad Zia Nazar, a photographer in Shahr-i-Naw Park, told Pajhwok Afghan News there had been significant changes in this Park, in the past it was not a proper place for visiting.

Referring to the uplift work in the park, he said: “Still rehabilitation work was underway in this Park but this place but it had converted to a proper entertainment place. I think it will become a proper place once the rehabilitation work is over.”

Construction and Rehabilitation of roundabouts

According to Barakzai last year 25 new roundabouts were built or rehabilitated in the city last year.

He added most roundabouts built in the past regime required rehabilitation or completion for work, adding that Municipality had to rehabilitate them in order to control traffic congestion.

Transfer of Garbage

Barakzai said that Municipality daily transferred an average 2,500 tonnes of garbage from the city.

He termed the lack of equipment and personnel a challenge and added: “The system of garbage collection was still old and we have a challenge in this regard.”

He, however, said that Municipality was striving to increase its personnel and get modern equipment to overcome challenges.

Moahmamd Nadir, the resident of Kabul City, said: “In the past two years rKabul Municipality had been successful in gathering the garbage and transferring it to another place. In the past garbage piled up in our neighbor and produced bad smell and viruses.”

“There is a garbage bin close to our house, daily in the morning municipality cleanliness officials collect and transfer its garbage,” he added.

This year’s schemes

Barakzai said this year the Municipality will executed 150 uplift schemes at the cost of over 5.2 billion afs and the amount would be provided from the municipality budget.

Of the 150 development schemes 85 were related to the road construction, traffic management, canalization and water management and the remaining would be executed in other areas.
